Letter from Mustangs President
by posted 06/23/2010

Hello Mustangs!

The 2010 Mustang season is just around the corner. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, point out some future events, and important dates.

My name is Steve Smith - yes, the second Steve Smith on the Mustang board.  I am the new president of the Mustang football board and an active supporter of the Superior Mustang Youth Football Organization.  I bring to the board a business background and previous board experience.  More importantly, I have a strong belief in what Mustang Football can do for the participating youth in our program.

To say that Mike Jones and the previous board did a great job would be a profound understatement, and I thank them for their hard work.  This year’s board will continue with the Mustang tradition of integrity and helping our youth to mature into leaders, both on and off the field.  With that said, I know that I have big shoes to fill.  So I will begin my new role with several announcements.

The first goal of the Mustang Board is to find a way to keep up with technology, safety, and player comfort by purchasing new helmets for our players.  Helmets are a little like flat screen televisions.  The old tube T.V. in the family room works but the new flat screens are sweet. So are the new Riddell helmets sweet.  So it is our goal through corporate, local business, and all of us to raise the money to put our kids in the newer helmets.
Going forward it will be called:  “Mustang Melons” helmet drive.

Second is an announcement from Tim McWilliams about conditioning workouts:

  • The workouts will be available to all ages and family members.
  • There will be no charge for the camp, but there will be an opportunity to voluntarily contribute to Mustang Melons.
  • Focus will be on stretching, cardiovascular development and isometrics.  Footballs will not be part of the workout.  Some kids bring them for afterwards, but the 75 minute session will not include them.
  • The workouts will run on the following dates starting at 7:00pm and finishing at 8:15pm:
                                    Tuesday, July 6
                                    Tuesday, July 13
                                    Tuesday, July 20
                                    Tuesday, July 27
                                    Tuesday, August 3

Finally, stay tuned for Mustang Melons announcements on our website: www.superiormustangs.com.  We are planning a Baskin Robbins night. Contributions will be appreciated at all of the HOA summer events and other events as they become available.

Please contact me at any time with thoughts and ideas.

Have a safe summer. See you soon.

Gratefully,
Steve A Smith

End of Season Parent Letter
by posted 12/10/2009

Mustang Parents,

It doesn’t seem possible, but another football season has come and gone. It seems like only yesterday we were fitting kids for equipment and getting started with practices. Time sure flies when you are having so much fun! I wanted to take the opportunity to touch base at the end of the season let you know a few things that have happened and others that will be happening.

First of all, a huge thanks to all the board members, coaches, team moms and all the other volunteers for making the 2009 season another great season for the Mustangs. We again had right around 200 kids, including cheerleaders and fielded 8 teams in 5 different age groups. Thanks also to all the parents who committed their time, energy and enthusiasm to make the season a special experience for our kids. I am always thrilled and amazed at the spirit and sportsmanship our parents display. I realize there are always issues that arise during the season, but on the whole we should be proud of the fact that we always strive and succeed at being better than our opponent, and I thank each and every one of you for that. You make it special for the kids! In the next few days we will be sending out a survey for all to complete anonymously, and I ask that each of you take the time to give us your feedback on the season. We are continually trying to improve the experience for the kids and your feedback helps.

We also had a very successful season on the field with several teams finishing in the top four of their division. A big congratulations to Bob Ure’s 11 year old blue team for winning the 11 year old Division 2 championship. Congratulations also to Tim McWilliams’ 10 year old team for their 2nd place finish in Division 2, John Cracraft’s 12 year old team for their 3rd place finish in Division 1 and Steve Smith’s 11 year old red team for their 4th place finish in Division 2. Also deserving of congratulations are Steve Harford and Chuck Tucker of the 8 year olds and Brian Ecton and Curtis Knittle from the 9 year olds. All 4 teams had great seasons and finished very strong.

I want to also thank our sponsors for their generous contributions to our organizations. Without them, we would not be able to provide a scholarship fund, our practice jerseys and many other things that make this organization so special. In addition to our regular sponsors, I want to give a special thanks to Covidien, Jordy Construction, Design Concepts, JVA Inc., Boulder Valley Lacrosse Association, Superior Lacrosse Club and the Town of Superior for the wonderful new scoreboard we now have at William’s Field.  Covidien made a very generous donation to procure the scoreboard and the others organizations donated time and services to have it installed. If you haven’t seen it, I suggest you go by the field and take a look; it is a wonderful addition to the community. It can be used by any sport utilizing the turf field and will be a great asset to the community for several years to come.

With the season over, it is now time for us to start looking forward to next year and the 2010 season. That process will start in January with the election of the new board members. There will be several people on the current board graduating from or leaving the organization this year and we need volunteers to help fill these positions. It takes a lot of work by many individuals to keep this organization running smoothly and I urge any of you that are interested to take part in this rewarding activity. If you are interested in a board position or helping with other organizational activities, please contact your head coach or any of the current board members listed on the website. We are currently taking nominations for all positions and elections will occur in January.

Finally, it is with a great deal of sadness that I tell you I will be leaving the organization in January as well. It has been an incredible eight years that I have been involved with the Mustang organization, but it is time to move on to other opportunities for me. I have truly been blessed with the opportunity to work with so many wonderful kids, volunteers and parents over those eighth years and I thank all of you for the help, support and friendship. It has been a great run and I look forward to supporting the next board and cheering on the sidelines next fall with all of you.

Thanks again for a wonderful season and I wish each of you a happy and blessed holiday season.

Sincerely,

Mike Jones

President, Superior Mustangs
